Introduction
Singapore Vipers Football Club, also known as Vipers Football Club (Singapore), is
an
amateur football club based in Singapore registered with the Registry
of Societies
(Reg No.: T10SS0007E) and affiliated with the Football Association
of Singapore (FAS).
Vipers
began its journey into competitive
football in August 2008, spending one season
in the ESPZEN
Saturday League before making the move over to the FAS
sanctioned
Equatorial Football League (EFL) in early 2009.
The club
currently
sends out
regular
teams each week to participate in EFL's Premiership and
Qualifying Division (Div 2), the
EFL Cup, and SAFRA Night League.
Club Expansion
In February 2009, Vipers 'B', otherwise known as Vipers Social
was formed to serve a dual
purpose of blooding
aspiring players for the first team and for beginners wishing to
learn
how to play in a competitive
environment. A two-man management team of Alex Liau
and Chua Wei Chuen
was named to helm the team.
Road
to excellence
6 June 2009 saw
the club's flagship team secure its first ever silverware when they
clinched the inaugural edition of the Questra
Challenge Cup at the Singapore National
Stadium with a 3-1 win
in the Final over SGX United. The Vipers reserves turned out to be
the
underdogs of the four team tournament and put in an impressive
performance to
clinch 3rd place.
The
Vipers first team then made its bow in continental competition in
November 2009
playing in the 8-team Borneo Football Cup, and reached
the Silver Final before
eventually succumbing 4-0 to Briged Sabah PGA, in a
match which was widely covered
by the Sabah press.
In 2010
Vipers won its first league title emerging as champion
of the EFL Qualifying
Division.
Vipers FC also retained their maiden trophy, the Questra
Challenge Cup, by
beating ESPZEN Sunday Div 1's Greats FC in a
tense penalty shoot-out in the Grand Final
at St Wilfrid's.
The
club took major steps towards achieving its 10-year roadmap of
competing in the
National Football League (NFL) when it
registered itself with the Registry of Societies
(RoS) on 11
January 2010, before receiving official affiliation with FAS on 27 August
2010.
Period
of transition
In early 2011, a vision of unifying the club's teams saw a
change in the club's structure,
as individual teams under the
Vipers brand such as Questra
Vipers, Vipers Evolution and
Vipers Social were removed to give
way to a Vipers first team and youth/reserve team
instead.
In May 2011, Vipers were crowned champions of EFL's top
flight for the first time
after
defeating South Buona Vista Saints 2-0 at Marsiling
Secondary to clinch the 2010/11 EFL
Premiership title.
The year was to be one with mixed fortunes, as the club went from
celebrating the EFL
title to crashing into disappointment as
Vipers
narrowly missed out on 2012 NFL
qualification by mere goal difference to
Newton Heath FC, this despite leading the
Island Wide League
table for 3 weeks in October 2011.
Vipers then went on to make their debut in the prestigious OPOD League of
Champions,
where the top amateur teams in Singapore met to compete for the title of
Singapore's
best amateur football team.
